What happens when evolution reshuffles the genome, but the regulatory instructions that control genes still need to work? A change in genomic neighbourhood can bring regulatory elements into unexpected proximity with genes, creating potential conflicts in gene regulation.

This paper explores how cells deal with these conflicts and how the 3D organization of the genome may provide part of the answer. Rather than simply looking at DNA as a linear sequence, the study takes us into the spatial organization of the genome and asks how changes in its architecture can help preserve regulatory control despite evolutionary rearrangements.

What if moving the pieces changes who can talk to whom?
