Collateral arteries act as natural bypasses to reroute blood during ischemic events and limit tissue injury. Surprisingly, guinea pigs display a dense, naturally occurring network of collaterals. What factors and cues enable the guinea pigs to develop this network? Could this be linked to their evolution at high altitudes?
